Unprotected sex on the rise among Singapore youth

Is Singapore becoming "more open"? Or simply following the downward path of the surrounding influences? ----- SINGAPORE: New survey data released in conjunction with World Contraception Day shows that unprotected sex is on the increase among young people in Singapore. Sixty-one per cent of 200 sexually active young people between the ages of 16 and 19 surveyed in Singapore have had sex without contraception with a new partner, a 12 per cent increase from the previous survey done in 2009. The multi-country survey, which is supported by a coalition of 10 international organisations with an interest in sexual health, said there is a significant disconnect between young people's attitudes to accepting responsibility for contraception and what they are doing in their day-to-day lives. It added that the results also highlight that confusion around contraceptive options is still widespread, with highly unreliable contraceptive methods , such as the "withdr...

A TROPICAL APPROACH

Image via Wikipedia ------------------- THIS year marks the 40th anniversary of James Cook University (JCU), an Australian institution ranked among the top 5 per cent of international universities by Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Institute of Higher Education . Established in 1970 in Queensland , Australia, JCU set up its Singapore campus in 2003. According to Professor Sandra Harding , vice chancellor and president of JCU, Singapore was a natural choice for the university, given the latter's focus on the tropics. "JCU is committed to working on issues associated with the tropical world, such as issues of ecology, conservation, health and disease, earth and environmental science , and indigenous people and cultures. Being advanced economies in the tropics, both Singapore and Australia have important leadership roles to play in these issues." Hence, JCU is able to differentiate itself from other Australian degree providers in Singapore by offering a full...

Preventing Teen Burnout

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr Bill Maier Just looking at a secondary school student's schedule book makes me tired. Secondary school students today are busier than ever. Not only does school start early, but after school there's soccer , tuition , piano lessons, gymnastics , events and homework that never seems to end. I don't know how some of them do it. It's good for teens to stay busy and productive. Not only are they less likely to get into trouble, they're learning valuable work habits for their future careers. But there are dangers we need to watch out for. Teens who try to do too much face the risk of burnout and exhaustion . They can get so busy that nothing gets done very well. Their grades may suffer, leading to worry and depression , even physical or emotional sickness. If your teen is too busy, it may be time to put the brakes on certain activities. Teach them to say no and to pace themselves. It's better for them to do a few things well than to ex...

HELPING KIDS GET ORGANISED

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr James Dobson What's the primary reason for failure in secondary school ? According to many teachers, the answer is not laziness or poor study skills . The main reason for failure in secondary school is poor organisation . An achieving student's file is organised with dividers and folders for handouts and assignments. A failing student's file is most often a mess of jumbled papers, if he even uses a file at all. Educational expert Cheri Fuller says it's a skill that should be taught early, even before students reach secondary school. It takes a good degree of organisation to keep them all straight and to prioritise assignments. They need training and other organisational skills such as planning to complete long term assignments a little at a time. This kind of exposure and training can help a flighty adolescent become a self-disciplined and self-propelled individual in time. Organisation. It is one very important key to success in school. Fr...
