HK study finds molecule that offers fertility hope

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection can be used to provide fertility for men with cystic fibrosis (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) Posted: 26 August 2011 HONG KONG: Hong Kong scientists said on Friday they have discovered a molecule that binds human sperm to an egg, i n a breakthrough which offers new hope for infertile couples. The study by researchers at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) found a key molecule on the coating of the human egg, called sialyl-LewisX (SLeX), which acts as a binding agent to help the sperm and egg stick together. "This research provides an enlightening answer to a basic important question and human fertilisation -- how does a sperm bind to an egg?" William Yeung , one of the researchers, told AFP . "But this is only a first step that will lead to more discoveries," said Yeung, who is also a professor at HKU's department of obstetrics and gynaecology. The identification of SLeX will help to pinpoint patients whose infertili...

Non-conducive classroom leads to low learning curve

Image
Image via Wikipedia Here is one article that relates the classroom environment to the reception or learning curve of students . Hopefully this can be remedied - and in the long term, solved. ----- Negative environment leads to lows in classroom by Shari' N. Welton March 10, 2011 Students in classrooms lacking sufficient materials and whose teachers feel stressed and unappreciated by colleagues fare worse academically and are more likely to experience mental health issues, according to a study released Wednesday by University of Maryland researchers.

“In essence, we’re looking at the class environment and how that matters for children’s well-being,” said  Melissa A. Milkie, sociology professor at the University of Maryland in College Park , Md.

The study, “ Classroom Learning Environments and the Mental Health of First-Grade Children,” appears in the March issue of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior . The research included a sample of abo...

Home Schooling

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr James Dobson When our children were young, my wife and I were just intent on seeing that they got a good education . But we only had two real options to choose from in those days — public schools or private schools . Today, there’s a third alternative, and it’s more than a little intriguing to me. The fastest-growing educational movement in the world today is the “Home Schools” phenomenon. More than 1.5 million American parents and multiple millions more in other countries have opted to teach their children at home. Most do it for just two or three years, but for some, as long as 12. The movement is now old enough to allow for comparisons, but the results, in most cases, have been remarkable. Universities are now enrolling their first big wave of home-schooled children, some of whom are the brightest and most well-adjusted students on campus . And standardised tests are verifying the efficiency of home-style learning. Some critics have worried a...

Preventing Teen Burnout

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr Bill Maier Just looking at a secondary school student's schedule book makes me tired. Secondary school students today are busier than ever. Not only does school start early, but after school there's soccer , tuition , piano lessons, gymnastics , events and homework that never seems to end. I don't know how some of them do it. It's good for teens to stay busy and productive. Not only are they less likely to get into trouble, they're learning valuable work habits for their future careers. But there are dangers we need to watch out for. Teens who try to do too much face the risk of burnout and exhaustion . They can get so busy that nothing gets done very well. Their grades may suffer, leading to worry and depression , even physical or emotional sickness. If your teen is too busy, it may be time to put the brakes on certain activities. Teach them to say no and to pace themselves. It's better for them to do a few things well than to ex...
