Growing Up to be More Than One Thing

English: A "Golden False Acacia" in the Swiss Garden at Old Warden. (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) Is this something like the same tree that adapts to the changing season? Far out? Ahh... just read on... ----- DEBORAH STRANGE As the pursuit of multiple professions and passions has become the norm, people juggle multiple identities. Kevin Gleeson, for instance, is a graphic artist for the New York Police Department , where he designs banners and materials for news conferences. He usually wears a jacket, tie and his long hair pulled into a ponytail. But one day, when he was called to the commissioner’s office unexpectedly, he wore pink pants and his hair undone. Mr. Gleeson was dressed as his alter-ego, a Keith Richards impersonator. “They call me the Keith-iest Keith,” Mr. Gleeson told The New York Times while preparing to play with the Stony Rollers, a Rolling Stones tribute band. Mr. Gleeson has been performing Keith Richards’s music for more than 40 years....

Public feedback sought on brain research issues

Animal,Porkey Pig, Lobund-Wistar (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) I would not allow my kids to be lab rats, but that is my decision as a father. What would yours be? ----- Advances in study, powerful tools have led to questions about impact on humans, society By Neo Chai Chin Jan 10, 2013 SINGAPORE - Should children be included in research on "smart drugs", or drugs that could improve their cognitive abilities? Should people lacking mental capacity be allowed to take part in genomic research? Does neuroscience research require more ethical safeguards than other types of biomedical research ? These are questions that the public is invited to mull over and provide feedback on, with the launch of a public consultation on Ethical , Legal and Social Issues in Neuroscience Research yesterday by the Bioethics Advisory Committee. Rapid advances in the study of the brain and the rest of the nervous system, as well as development of more powerful tools to explore and...

Grief boosts "heart-attack risk"

Image
There is a reason why "a merry countenance is good to the heart..." "There is a time for everything... ... a time to laugh, a time to cry..." ----- Posted: 10 January 2012 WASHINGTON : Grief over the death of a loved one can cause a huge spike in a person's risk of heart attack , especially in the early days after the loss, said a US study on Monday. The research tracked nearly 2,000 adults who survived a heart attack and found that among those who had just lost a loved one, the risk of a heart attack soared 21 times higher than normal in the first day. The risk rate remained six times higher than normal through the first week, and declined slowly over the course of the first month, said the findings in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association . Intense grief can cause a host of symptoms that raise heart risks, including higher heart rate, blood pressure, stress hormone levels and blood clotting. Grieving people are also prone to lo...

Study: More Kids Suffer Firearm Injuries than Previously Believed

Image
Image via Wikipedia (BOSTON) -- Each year, more than 20,000 children go to U.S. emergency rooms with gun injuries, a new study estimates. That number is 30 percent higher than what researchers had previously found.   Researchers at Children's Hospital Boston analyzed reports from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey of U.S. emergency department visits from 1999 to 2007. In those eight years, they counted nearly 186,000 children, from newborns to 19-year-olds, who had been treated for firearm injuries. About 8,300 of those injuries proved fatal.   The study found that non-Caucasian boys age 12 and older were most likely to be injured by a gun. Forty-seven percent of the injuries they counted were in the South, but the Midwestern states had the highest proportion of firearm injuries relative to the population size.   Dr. Saranya Srinivasan, one of the study's authors, said the pediatric emergency physicians have kept track of the numbers of children injur...

Sex ed website disgusting

This article is in its entirety, without addition or subtraction. Read with discretion and caution. ----- By Bob Salsberg Associated Press April 26, 2011 BOSTON—Massachusetts public health officials said Tuesday they would be willing to consider changes in the content of a sexual education website aimed at teens, after critics in the Legislature complained that the site had graphic and "disgusting" descriptions of sex acts and downplayed the risks of abortion. The lawmakers sent a letter to Gov. Deval Patrick asking him cut off state funding for www.mariatalks.com , which is maintained by the independent AIDS Action Committee with the help of a $100,000 annual grant from the state Department of Public Health . "Gov. Patrick, take down this website," demanded state Rep. Marc Lombardo , R- Billerica , one of about 20 members of a bipartisan group that held a Statehouse news conference. Patrick himself offered no immediate comment, but the publi...

I never thought I'd be...

Back in the olden days, when we were young (or younger), we’d do a lot of things, mainly because our old folks tell us to, partly as part of our studies, partly as part of peer pressure , and still partly due to our curiosity as growing kids who would explore anything on sight and anything within reach. To be exact, what would make our parents and abuelos and abuelas scream is when we explore things within sight, but beyond our reach… you know what I mean. That should bring a memory or two, and lots of smiles. At this point I call to mind one area of my childhood activities. A regular church activity. We sang. We sing. We've rendered a Solo, a Duet, a Trio, a Quartet, or a Choir. There's even a Male Group. And as in most cases of singing, we sing other peoples’ compositions. It never occurred to me that I’d be singing my own songs , never thought that I’d be composing songs, to be sung by me, or by other singers . Unleash Your Inner Psychic! What could have brought abou...
