Parents who lose a baby can die of a broken heart

This is just sad... ----- Posted: 08 September 2011 PARIS: Parents who lose a new baby run a high risk themselves of dying prematurely, according to a British study published on Thursday. Investigators delved into a random sample of national death registrations for the years 1971 to 2006. They compared deaths among parents who had been bereaved in the first year of a child's life or whose child had been stillborn, against deaths among parents whose baby had survived beyond the first year. Bereaved parents were between two and four times likelier to die or become widowed in the first 10 years of the child's death compared with non-bereaved counterparts. Mothers in particular were at threat. Bereaved mothers in England and Wales were four times likelier to die prematurely, and bereaved mothers in Scotland six times likelier, than women whose child had survived beyond the first year of life. The risk for mothers lessened slightly over time, but was still si...

Downward mobile

Image
By Dr James Dobson We’ve all heard of corporate ladder climbers who’ve earned the label “upwardly mobile”. But I bet you haven’t heard of many people being downwardly mobile. At least not by choice. I know of two physicians who limit their practice hours to allow more time for their young children . They actually chose the opposite course of most career-minded individuals: Down-scaling their jobs, passing up career opportunities and taking a cut in pay. As one of these doctors explained: “I saw many people on their death bed and I never heard one of them say he wished he’d spent more time at the office.” Now I realise most families could not afford to slash their work hours. After all, these doctors admit it’s their higher income that allows such flexibility. Still, I like the idea of making a decision to arrange your schedule and lifestyle to give your kids your best hours, not just the leftovers. It’s a good idea not to add any new activity unless something equally engaging ...

A new way to steal, then make money

Image via Wikipedia SOLE-SEARCHING MOURNER STOLE 1,200 PAIRS OF SHOES ------------------------------------------------- SEOUL - A South Korean who stole 1,200 pairs of expensive shoes from funeral homes while posing as a mourner has been arrested. The man identified only as Park, 59, took off his own shoes before entering mourning rooms and donned the stolen footwear when he left. The police in southern Seoul 's Suseo district said Park intended to sell them through his own second-hand shoe business . Koreans normally remove outdoor footwear when indoors, especially at funeral homes. Park was caught stealing three pairs of shoes, worth a total of 2 million won ($2,440) when new, at one funeral home. The police then raided his warehouse and found 1,200 pairs stored according to size in preparation for resale. A police officer said they put the footwear on display last week and many pairs were reclaimed by owners. AFP From TODAY, Friday, 19-Feb-2010 ---------- Related article...

Value Your Marriage

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr James Dobson Love is a fragile thing . Like a plant , it must be watered and cultivated or it will wither and die. It seems, some newly- married couples have the misguided notion that their love will continue to grow naturally through the years. But the truth is that love must be maintained and protected if it's going to survive. (Love can perish when a husband works seven days a week, or when spouses don't communicate regularly.) The keen edge of a loving relationship may be dulled through the routine pressures of living. As I experienced during the early days of my own marriage when I was working full-time and trying to finish my doctorate . My wife was teaching in school and running our small home. I remember the evening I realised what this busy life was doing to our relationship — we still loved each other, but it had been too long since we'd felt the spirit of warmth and closeness. My books were pushed aside that night and we took long walk...
