Mental Health, Parenthood, and Poverty

Image
The mental health issue keeps on being discussed and debated, and I've seen one article that relates mental health problems with poverty, and goes on to say why. And there is one other aspect of the article that I like: insisting that parents take a stand on child-rearing despite the odd facts of life. I can't repost the article here due to copyright issues, so if you are getting interested, click below for the article: Behavioral, mental health problems play big role in other childhood issues Related articles Mental Health on Abortion and Childbearing (beinghealthyhomeandaway.blogspot.com) Some news for Translucid and for Bob (translucid.ca) Three in 10 Britons suffer sleep problems which could cause mental health problems (mirror.co.uk) Better Mental Health Care Won't End Murder, But It Will Save Lives [Aftermath] (jezebel.com) You: Nick Clegg to unveil £400m plan to help "cure" mental health patients - Mirror.co.uk (news.google.com) Mental ...

Take charge of your emotions

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr Bill Maier Having another blue day today? Don’t worry, you’ll feel better. But don’t be surprised if your child misbehaves tomorrow. A new study has found that the day after mum acts sad or angry in front of her children , they are more likely to be defiant and inattentive. Children pick up on our mood and it affects how they feel. When they act out, often they are just reacting to what they have seen from us. Everyone gets sad from time to time but moping around does not make things any better. Try getting yourself out of the house for a while. A walk around the block is a great way to relieve stress or anxiety . Or take the children to the park and let them play while you relax in the shade with a good book. You might even surprise them by chasing them around the playground. It is difficult to stay sad when you are playing and having fun. Don't live with depression

Image
By Dr Bill Maier Depression can come from a lot of sources, and it can completely drain the joy out of life. Not all cases of depression are the same. Some people go into depressive moods that leave them utterly immobilised, while others just find themselves sad more often than they should be. Regardless of the degree, the effects can be profound, leading people to think and do things that they otherwise would never consider. Serious cases can even lead to thoughts of suicide . And almost all cases leave people with a sense of dejection and hopelessness. Not only can you no longer see the light at the end of the tunnel — you don’t believe the tunnel ever ends. But there’s no reason for anyone to live with depression. There are therapies and treatments available to help manage even the most debilitating cases. Trust me — there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and help is within your grasp. From TODAY, Voices - Wednesday, 02-June-2010 ----- Related articles by Z...

Anxiety or disorder?

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr Bill Maier We all struggle with fear from time to time. But when does fear go past anxiety to become a full-fledged disorder? It’s normal to get butterflies in your stomach before giving a big speech , or meeting a blind date. Anxiety is a natural response to stress . It actually prepares the body for threatening situations, and can be a healthy thing. But sometimes fear can lead to phobias or attacks. So, when does natural fear qualify as a disorder? In short, it’s when normal anxiety does the opposite of what it was designed to do. Instead of helping us cope, it actually prevents us from coping, dramatically disrupting our daily lives. They’re the result of a biological illness, usually caused by past experiences. Often it takes professional help to overcome them. If you sense you might have a problem, talk to your doctor about it. When You Have ADHD Kids

Image
Image via CrunchBase I don't have ADHD kids, and while I may say that I empathize with parents who do, I can't really wear their shoes. An Ezine article original, may this short writing bring help to those who need it most. Read on... ---------- Dealing With ADHD Kids Dealing with ADHD kids is one of the most difficult challenges any parent will face. They are a handful, taking unnecessary risks and showing an seemingly endless array of impulsive behavior. They typically underachieve academically as well, presenting an additional layer of parental challenges. Don’t kid with your child’s behavior

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr Bill Maier A lot of defiant behaviour is caused by parents who simply don't know how to discipline. But there are times when parents do all the right things yet still can't seem to keep their kids in line. In these cases, it's usually one of two things at work — either the child is extremely strong-willed, or they're struggling with some type of undiagnosed disorder, like ADHD or Bipolar syndrome. The truth is, kids who suffer from ADHD or some other developmental disorder simply don't respond to normal parenting techniques. They're not bad kids, and they're usually just as frustrated as their parents. If you're concerned about your child's behaviour, have them tested by a licensed professional. If they're diagnosed with a disorder, there are extremely effective treatments available. It could make all the difference in the world — both to you and your child. When Kids Act Out

Image
By Dr Bill Maier Would you be able to tell if your child was struggling with depression or other dangerous emotions ? One mother emailed me about her daughter’s unusual behavior. Her husband had taken a job out of town, and wasn’t spending as much time with the family , causing their eleven year old daughter to begin acting out. The girl was threatening to run away, even to kill herself! Obviously, this girl was struggling with her father’s absence, but there were other issues at work as well. It’s never normal for an eleven year old to threaten suicide , even in a fit of anger. I encouraged the mother to get professional help – and get it fast! Kids aren’t equipped to deal with difficult life issues the way that adults are, and it’s our job to watch for signs of emotional problems. If your child shows signs of out-of-control anger or depression, don’t take it lightly. From TODAY, Voices – Monday, 29-Jun-2009 Related articles by Zemanta Moving May Up Adolescent ...

Coping With Anxiety

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr James Dobson One of the unfortunate characteristics of life in the modern world is the high level of anxiety so many people experience. Most of us have moments when we feel some kind of emotional discomfort. But for many, gripping fears and uneasiness are everyday companions. This anxiety may manifest itself in the form of dizziness , headaches , nausea , stomach cramps , an inability to concentrate, and persistent conflict with others. For those who find themselves in this situation, let me offer some common-sense suggestions that may help. First, we must take care of our physical being. We need adequate sleep and make the time to exercise and relax because there is a connection between mind and body. Second, we should dig for insight. It is widely believed that anxieties such as agoraphobia are the by-products of repressed feelings. We must learn to deal with them. If we're bitter over a wrong, we must find a way to forgive. If we're afraid of ou...

When stress gets out of hand

Image
By Dr Bill Maier It is the middle of the night and you wake up in a cold sweat . Your heart is racing and your mind frantically works to figure out what is wrong. No, this is not a bad dream ... you are probably having an anxiety attack. Extreme anxiety is more prominent than you might think and people who struggle with it often do not know what to do or where to turn. Some stress is irrational and can become so severe that it leaves a person largely immobilised for weeks at a time. In these cases, it is almost impossible to overcome it without professional help. But other types of stress can actually make us stronger. Everyone goes through times of trial and confusion, and anxiety is a natural response . A healthy dose of concern can often help us work through a problem, or motivate us to change. The key is knowing when anxiety has gotten out of hand. If you go through long periods of depression or laziness on the heels of a stressful situation, you might want to see a doctor. Fro...
