Predators on the road

Image
From Focus on the Family Some years ago, my family and I visited the magnificent wild animal preserve known as the Serengeti in Tanzania . It had rained all day and we eventually came to a stretch of road that was almost impassable. At that point, our 17-year-old son, Ryan, volunteered to help. “I’ll run ahead and look at the road,” he said, “and then I’ll wave to let you know which way to go.” Well, the guide who was with us said: “Mmmm, Ryan, I don’t think that’s a very good idea. You just don’t know what might be out there in the tall grass .” Further on, we saw a huge male lion crouched in the grass off to one side. I have thought about that experience many times in reference to today’s children. It is a tough time to grow up. Passage through adolescence can be a perilous journey because of the predators lurking in the grass. Too many teenagers succumb to alcohol , drugs, suicide and violence. It is our responsibility as parents to stay close to them on the muddy ...

Don't live with depression

Image
By Dr Bill Maier Depression can come from a lot of sources, and it can completely drain the joy out of life. Not all cases of depression are the same. Some people go into depressive moods that leave them utterly immobilised, while others just find themselves sad more often than they should be. Regardless of the degree, the effects can be profound, leading people to think and do things that they otherwise would never consider. Serious cases can even lead to thoughts of suicide . And almost all cases leave people with a sense of dejection and hopelessness. Not only can you no longer see the light at the end of the tunnel — you don’t believe the tunnel ever ends. But there’s no reason for anyone to live with depression. There are therapies and treatments available to help manage even the most debilitating cases. Trust me — there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and help is within your grasp. From TODAY, Voices - Wednesday, 02-June-2010 ----- Related articles by Z...

When Kids Act Out

Image
By Dr Bill Maier Would you be able to tell if your child was struggling with depression or other dangerous emotions ? One mother emailed me about her daughter’s unusual behavior. Her husband had taken a job out of town, and wasn’t spending as much time with the family , causing their eleven year old daughter to begin acting out. The girl was threatening to run away, even to kill herself! Obviously, this girl was struggling with her father’s absence, but there were other issues at work as well. It’s never normal for an eleven year old to threaten suicide , even in a fit of anger. I encouraged the mother to get professional help – and get it fast! Kids aren’t equipped to deal with difficult life issues the way that adults are, and it’s our job to watch for signs of emotional problems. If your child shows signs of out-of-control anger or depression, don’t take it lightly. From TODAY, Voices – Monday, 29-Jun-2009 Related articles by Zemanta Moving May Up Adolescent ...
