Infant sleep positioners cause death: US health officials

Image
Some things we mean for good causes something bad - and it is with best intentions sometimes...! ----- Posted: 22 November 2012 CHICAGO: Bolsters used to keep sleeping babies on their backs pose a suffocation hazard, health officials warned Wednesday after a recent death raised the 'sleep positioners' toll to at least 13 US infants . Health officials first warned parents not to use the devices in 2010 and cracked down on manufacturers who claimed they could prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome , which claims more than 2,000 infants a year in the United States . But the 'sleep positioners' - which typically feature bolsters attached to each side of a thin mat and sometimes a wedge to elevate the baby's head - remain on the market. Most of the babies - all four months of age or younger - suffocated after rolling from their side to their stomach. Some were found trapped between the bolster and the side of the crib. In addition to the 13 reported deaths since 19...

China faces sperm donor dearth

Image
This seems like an irony, in my opinion... China losing out on reproduction? ----- By Kristine Lim Posted: 15 November 2011 SHANGHAI, China: China faces a shortage of sperm donors , and the quality of sperm adds to the infertility problem as more couples seek out sperm banks. Only about five to 10 per cent of sperm donations make the mark. The hectic pace of life, stress at work, as well as a changing environment with more pollution and exposure to elements such as radiation affect fertility. In Shanghai, about 2,500 couples seek out the sperm bank each year. They can wait up to three years for a donor. Shanghai Human Sperm Bank head Li Zheng said: "If you come to the hospital and take a look at the men without sperm or who are infertile, you will see how much stress they have. "For me, it is really difficult to break the news that he cannot have children at the end of the treatment. "It is a huge blow to the men. They face a lot of pressure a...

Some birth control shows higher clot risk

Image
Posted: 28 October 2011 WASHINGTON: Some birth control products, including contraceptive pills , rings and patches for women, carry a significantly higher risk of blood clot than low-dose medications, US regulators said Thursday. The US Food and Drug Administration said in its review of studies that have included more than 800,000 women that the higher risks are posed by products such as the pill Yaz , the transdermal Ortho Evra patch, and the NuvaRing vaginal insert. All three methods are "associated with an increased risk of VTE (deep venous thrombosis) relative to the standard low-dose" pills, the FDA said. Featured in the study were pills that contain drospirenone, as opposed to another type of progestin known as levonorgestrel. Some brand names include Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz, Ocella , Loryna, Gianvi, Safyral, Syeda and Zarah. Yaz is the second biggest selling product made by the German pharmaceutical giant Bayer, with 1.56 billion in global sales. NuvaRing is...

US begins first trial with human embryonic stem cells

Image
Here is where the battle between morality and legality is pronounced - even in this high-technology era, the question remains. Does it mean that you can, then you will? -----   WASHINGTON - US doctors have begun the first tests of human embryonic stem cells in patients, treating a man with spinal cord injuries in a landmark trial of the controversial process, the Geron Corporation said on Monday. The patient began the pioneering treatment on Friday with an injection of the biotech company's human embryonic stem cells, as part of a clinical trial that aims to test safety and efficacy towards regaining sensation and movement. The treatment took place at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia, a spokeswoman for the hospital told AFP, declining to give further details due to patient privacy concerns. The Phase I trial is expected to involve around 10 patients. Participants in the human trials must be severely injured and start treatment with Geron's product, GRNOPC1,...
