The Pressure to Conform

Image
By Dr James Dobson It has always been interesting for me to observe the “herd” instinct in teenagers around the world. There’s just a remarkable sameness to their culture today, no matter where you go. In Australia , Russia , Latin America, and the United States , adolescents tend to dress in similar ways and hold common attitudes. And why not? They’re watching the same movies and television shows and listening to the same music. The next generation is just being homogenised by this electronic revolution and sometimes the “urge to merge” becomes humorous. Perhaps you have read the story of a teen choir performing in Miami . In the middle of the Battle Hymn of the Republic , one young woman in the front row passed out. Well, that planted the idea of fainting in 32 other impressionable heads. Minutes later, a boy buckled and disappeared from the back row. And then a girl in the middle took a dive. By the end of the song, 20 kids lay flat on the ground. Conformity is one of t...

TV commercials and kids

Image
Image by vancouverfilmschool via Flickr By Dr James Dobson When you sit down to watch a 30-minute television programme , eight minutes go to advertising. I'll have to admit it seems like much more than that to me, but over the course of a week, we and our children are exposed to an incredible number of advertisements. I believe it's essential that we help our kids determine the merit of those messages. Author Faith McDonald suggests we can teach our kids how to analyse the commercials they see. This assumes you will set aside time to watch television with your children, to help them understand the differences between fact and fantasy and how to discern the truth amidst what can be a confusing mix of contradictory messages. Start by discussing the difference between “real” and “pretend” on television. With special effects and computer-generated graphics, such differences can be blurred in a child's mind. As you watch various commercials, point out to your child...

USE TV WISELY

Image
By Dr Bill Maier We all enjoy watching a good family programme on television , but that is not the same as letting your kids plop down in front of the tube to watch whatever happens to be on. Teach your kids to be selective in their viewing habits, and to use their time wisely. You might start by limiting the amount of time they're allowed to watch, and then encouraging them to plan ahead. Help them choose which programmes are worth spending their time on. The best shows are those that stimulate other interests, like singing, or animals, or outdoor activities . If your child likes to bake, introduce them to cooking programmes, and then encourage them to write down the recipes for later. If science is their thing, turn them on to the Discovery channel . Television can be a great teaching tool, but only if we use it wisely.
