Infant sleep positioners cause death: US health officials

Image
Some things we mean for good causes something bad - and it is with best intentions sometimes...! ----- Posted: 22 November 2012 CHICAGO: Bolsters used to keep sleeping babies on their backs pose a suffocation hazard, health officials warned Wednesday after a recent death raised the 'sleep positioners' toll to at least 13 US infants . Health officials first warned parents not to use the devices in 2010 and cracked down on manufacturers who claimed they could prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome , which claims more than 2,000 infants a year in the United States . But the 'sleep positioners' - which typically feature bolsters attached to each side of a thin mat and sometimes a wedge to elevate the baby's head - remain on the market. Most of the babies - all four months of age or younger - suffocated after rolling from their side to their stomach. Some were found trapped between the bolster and the side of the crib. In addition to the 13 reported deaths since 19...

Not too late for pregnant smokers to butt out

Image
Posted: 07 July 2011 STOCKHOLM: Women who quit smoking once they find out they are pregnant can give birth to a baby weighing the same as a child born to a non-smoker, a British expert told a European fertility meeting Wednesday. "Once you find you're pregnant, its not too late to do something about your smoking," Nick Macklon, a professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Southampton , told AFP . "If you stop smoking, you can have a baby with the same birth weight as if you'd never smoked," he explained, adding birth weight was an important predictor of long-term health. But "if you find you're pregnant and you continue smoking, that will have a major effect on the birth weight of your child," he warned. Macklon's findings, presented at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) in Stockholm , are based on a study of more than 50,000 pregnant women in Southampt...

What your baby sees

Image
From Focus on the Family Ever wonder how your baby sees the world? Well, here’s what doctors have discovered. Newborns under one month of age have vision that is about 40 times blurrier than yours. They can’t decipher fine lines or colours — which is why they respond to black-and-white patterns and deeply contrasting colours. They focus best on things 15 to 30cm away. Between two and three months, they start to distinguish bright colours and see a bit better. But they don’t develop depth perception until the fourth or fifth month. That is when it becomes easier for them to reach for small objects. But their vision is still about eight times blurrier than normal. Somewhere between eight and 12 months they start to see as well as an adult, with keen depth perception. Their short-range vision may still be a bit stronger than their long range, but that will usually change by their first birthday. Let kids play

Image
By Dr Bill Maier Watching a child’s mind develop is a fascinating process. A child’s brain begins to grow and develop from the moment of conception. In fact, studies done on newborns show that they recognise stories that were read to them while they were still in the womb. Young babies don’t appear to be doing much more than sleeping and eating, but they’re amazingly intelligent. And they learn new things every day. At age two, imagination kicks into high gear, and kids start to learn through make-believe. When we see them playing house or dress-up they’re actually stimulating their cognitive growth. Each game instills new reasoning and critical thinking skills. Then around seven, they become more logical and practical thinkers. They play games like checkers and Battleship, learning to solve problems that they couldn’t have done before. So encourage your kids to play all they want, and have fun watching their brains grow. Junk Food for Toddlers

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr Bill Maier I've heard of starting babies on solid foods too early — but starting them on French fries ? Researchers recently studied the eating habits of 3,000 babies between the ages of four and 24 months. What they found was alarming. A significant number of those kids had diets high in fat, sugar and salt . A lot of parents were giving their babies junk food like French fries and pizza , even before the age of two! Soda was served in baby bottles to kids as young as seven months! A one to two-year-old infant needs about 950 calories a day, but the survey showed most were averaging well over 1,200 calories! As parents, it's our job to help our kids develop a taste for healthy foods, especially when they're young. Healthy eating habits for kids start from young age

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr Bill Maier What kid wouldn't want " chocolate frosted sugar bombs" for breakfast? Especially if they know it's in the cupboard. It's hard to convince preschoolers to eat right once they've developed a taste for junk foods . The key is to start them young on a healthy diet-while they're still eating out of a high chair . A good way to begin is to keep babies on breast milk or formula for at least the first year. You can introduce solid foods at around five months of age, but when you do, make sure it's pure and unadulterated. Avoid adding salt, or sweetening their food with sugar. You should also never give honey to a baby under the age of one. Honey can cause infant botulism and do damage to their nervous system. Finally, avoid giving your baby a bottle or snack the second they become fussy. Using food as a pacifier only causes overeating and an emotional dependence on food. Are You Ready for Parenthood?

Image
By Dr Bill Maier Not all new parents are prepared for the changes that a baby will bring into their lives. Before having children, couples are free to go out to dinner at a moment's notice, or watch a movie. They can stay up late on Friday night and sleep in on Saturday. But all that changes when baby comes home. Now, your free time is spent caring for your new infant . Your schedule is no longer your own, and you can also forget about waking up late on Saturdays. Sounds grim? Only to those who haven't experienced the joy of parenthood! It's a lot of work, but nothing could be more fulfilling. The important thing is to go into parenthood with your eyes wide open. Make sure you understand the demands of childrearing before you decide to conceive. If you're ready, you're in for the ride of your life. From TODAY, Voices – Friday, 19-Jun-2009 Related articles by Zemanta Parenting Tips For The First-time Mom.
