Children Don’t Fit on To-Do Lists

It's the little guy who's leaning against the wall with his hands in the pockets of his blue jeans . He misses his father during the long day but Dad's all tired out. Besides he has a briefcase full of work to be done. Mum had promised to take him to the park this afternoon but then she had to attend a school meeting at the last minute. Children just don't fit into a to-do list very well. It takes time to introduce them to good books. It takes time to listen once more to the bruised knee episode from the playground and talk about the bird with the broken wing. These are the building blocks of esteem held together with the mortar of love. But they seldom materialise amidst busy schedules. Image via Wikipedia By Dr James Dobson It's amazing how many problems in our lives can be eliminated by this simple prescription: Get some rest! The late, great football coach, Vince Lombardi , once said: " Fatigue makes cowards of us all." How right he was. Physical depletion renders us less able to cope with the noisiness of children; with a broken washing machine , and with the other minor irritations of everyday living. Perhaps this explains why men and women who are overworked often become cowardly, whining, griping and biting to those they love. I think many today need to make rest a priority. Each of us requires a certain number of hours of sleep, and we should make certain we get it. We should turn down invitations to serve on yet another committee, or late dinner dates, or even promotions, if we know our reserves are already depleted. We might even carve out an entire day, setting it aside for recreation in the best sense of the word: A walk in the park or a l...
