Downward mobile

By Dr James Dobson We’ve all heard of corporate ladder climbers who’ve earned the label “upwardly mobile”. But I bet you haven’t heard of many people being downwardly mobile. At least not by choice. I know of two physicians who limit their practice hours to allow more time for their young children . They actually chose the opposite course of most career-minded individuals: Down-scaling their jobs, passing up career opportunities and taking a cut in pay. As one of these doctors explained: “I saw many people on their death bed and I never heard one of them say he wished he’d spent more time at the office.” Now I realise most families could not afford to slash their work hours. After all, these doctors admit it’s their higher income that allows such flexibility. Still, I like the idea of making a decision to arrange your schedule and lifestyle to give your kids your best hours, not just the leftovers. It’s a good idea not to add any new activity unless something equally engaging ...

Priceless memories

By Dr James Dobson I’ve always thought that kids were funny. I’m reminded, of Ann Ortland’s 11-year-old son, Nels, whom she described in her book, Disciplines of a Beautiful Woman. She had taken this rambunctious boy to their paediatrician for a routine physical examination . Before seeing the doctor , however, the nurse attempted to obtain a medical history. “Tell me, Mrs Ortlund,” said the nurse, “how’s he sleeping?” Nels answered on his own behalf, and he said: “I sleep very well.” The nurse wrote that down. “Mrs Ortlund, how are his bowels?” said the nurse. The boy responded:, “Oh, they’re good — A, E, I, O, U.” I encourage you to take the time to record the memorable moments you experience with your children . If you don’t have time to take elaborate notes or don’t have access to a video camera , keep a diary, record an audio clip , and by all means maintain a photo album. A night of grief

My parents walked a rocky road in the early days of their marriage . But their relationship was soon cemented tight. And from that time until the day my mother died, she loved that man. It is impossible to describe how much she loved him. It was the kind of love for a husband that most men only dream about. A few years after my father died, my mother went into the hospital . She was experiencing some symptoms. So they ran a barrage of tests, and finally two physicians sat down with her. They said: “Mrs Dobson, your problem is not a physical ailment. It is grief that is killing you, and you must find a way to release it.” But she never did. She couldn’t do it. She simply loved my father too deeply. Anxiety or disorder?

Image via Wikipedia By Dr Bill Maier We all struggle with fear from time to time. But when does fear go past anxiety to become a full-fledged disorder? It’s normal to get butterflies in your stomach before giving a big speech , or meeting a blind date. Anxiety is a natural response to stress . It actually prepares the body for threatening situations, and can be a healthy thing. But sometimes fear can lead to phobias or attacks. So, when does natural fear qualify as a disorder? In short, it’s when normal anxiety does the opposite of what it was designed to do. Instead of helping us cope, it actually prevents us from coping, dramatically disrupting our daily lives. They’re the result of a biological illness, usually caused by past experiences. Often it takes professional help to overcome them. If you sense you might have a problem, talk to your doctor about it.
