Parenting: Hands-On vs. Digital

Nick D'Aloisio on stage at CES 2014 (Photo credit: Yahoo UK Media Relations ) 20-July-2014 ----- by Peter Catapano Parents who spent their own formative years with textbooks, pencils and typewriters can tell you that our technological age can be a confusing place to raise a child. But some things never change. Parents still want the best for their young. It's likely that the couple who raised Nick D'Aloisio , a 17-year-old British high school student, are pretty pleased. Nick recently sold his news-reading app, Summly , to Yahoo for a price reported to be in the tens of millions of dollars. Nick's mother and father apparently had no special knowledge of technology but nurtured their son's early interest in it. While money doesn't signify a lifetime of good parenting, it reduces the urgency of the question of what Nick will do to make a living. This is not the case for almost every other young person entering the work world. "There is incr...

Wandering minds make people unhappy: study

I don't practice yoga. And even then, a wandering mind has been a problem since time immemorial . Did you hear what I'm saying, or is your mind wandering ? Joke! Now, stay with me, will yah? ----- WASHINGTON - Maybe you should listen to that yoga teacher who counsels you to stay in the moment. A US study out Thursday suggests that people spend about half of their time thinking about being somewhere else, or doing something other than what they are doing, and this perpetual act of mind-wandering makes them unhappy. "A human mind is a wandering mind, and a wandering mind is an unhappy mind," wrote psychologists Matthew Killingsworth and Daniel Gilbert of Harvard University in the journal Science. "The ability to think about what is not happening is a cognitive achievement that comes at an emotional cost." The study tracked 2,250 people via the trendy iPhone gadgets using an application, or app, that contacted volunteers at "random interva...

Raise your child's IQ (2)

Image via Wikipedia By Dr James Dobson According to Dr Burton White at Harvard University , there are six factors that contribute to the intellectual capacity of a child, three of which were discussed in yesterday’s column. Now for the rest of the list ... It was shown that children given free access to the living rooms of their homes progressed much faster than those whose movements were restricted. Next, the nuclear family is the most important educational delivery system. If we’re going to produce capable, happy children, it will be by strengthening family units and by improving the interactions that occur within them. Finally, the best parents were those who excelled at three key functions: They were superb designers and organisers of their children’s environments; they permitted their children to interrupt them for brief 30-second episodes during which personal comfort and information were exchanged; and lastly, they were firm disciplinarians, while simultaneously show...

Raise your child's IQ

Image via Wikipedia By Dr James Dobson According to a study by Dr Burton White at Harvard University , there are six key factors that contribute to the development of intelligence in children . Here are the first three: It is increasingly clear that the origins of human competence are found in a critical period of development between eight and 18 months of age. The child’s experiences during these brief months do more to influence future intellectual competence than any time before or after. The single most important factor in the life of the child is his mother. Says Dr White: “She carries more influence on her child’s experiences than any other circumstance.” Fathers are important too, but nothing compares with a mother’s love and involvement during that critical period. The amount of live language directed at a child (not to be confused with television , radio , or overheard conversations) is vital to his development of fundamental linguistic, intellectual, and social sk...
