Take charge of your emotions

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr Bill Maier Having another blue day today? Don’t worry, you’ll feel better. But don’t be surprised if your child misbehaves tomorrow. A new study has found that the day after mum acts sad or angry in front of her children , they are more likely to be defiant and inattentive. Children pick up on our mood and it affects how they feel. When they act out, often they are just reacting to what they have seen from us. Everyone gets sad from time to time but moping around does not make things any better. Try getting yourself out of the house for a while. A walk around the block is a great way to relieve stress or anxiety . Or take the children to the park and let them play while you relax in the shade with a good book. You might even surprise them by chasing them around the playground. It is difficult to stay sad when you are playing and having fun. Mothers and Sons

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr James Dobson What can a mother do when she feels confused and frustrated about raising a son? Many women these days express a sense of anxiety about dealing with their own sons. Whether she’s single or married, there’s a feeling of not being equipped to meet the special challenges of teaching and training a young boy. A friend of mine, Mrs Jean Lush, has written a wonderful book on the subject called Mothers and Sons . I think many mothers will be encouraged to hear her advice. First, she says that mothers should realise that it’s normal for little boys to be difficult — even extremely difficult. Emerging masculinity can be a boisterous and destructive force. Mothers should learn to anticipate their son’s energy level and look for ways to channel that force into exercise and constructive activity. Also, when we look at little boys, let’s keep in mind that they aren’t finished yet. History shows that many great men began as baffling, headstrong boys who...

Empty nest Dad

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr Bill Maier We hear a lot about mothers struggling with Empty Nest Syndrome, but often it’s good old dad who takes it the hardest. All parents have a hard time when kids leave home, but a recent survey showed that many fathers actually take it harder than their wives. Some men go through long periods of depression and anxiety . Experts believe this is because fathers often have more regrets. They’ve been so busy building a nice home and a successful career that they’ve let the years slip through their fingers. Suddenly, they look up and it’s too late. Their child is gone, and they never developed the kind of relationship they wanted to have. If you still have children at home, take the time now to enjoy being with them while they’re young. Use the time you have to invest in their lives, and get to know them while you have a chance. Anxiety or disorder?

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr Bill Maier We all struggle with fear from time to time. But when does fear go past anxiety to become a full-fledged disorder? It’s normal to get butterflies in your stomach before giving a big speech , or meeting a blind date. Anxiety is a natural response to stress . It actually prepares the body for threatening situations, and can be a healthy thing. But sometimes fear can lead to phobias or attacks. So, when does natural fear qualify as a disorder? In short, it’s when normal anxiety does the opposite of what it was designed to do. Instead of helping us cope, it actually prevents us from coping, dramatically disrupting our daily lives. They’re the result of a biological illness, usually caused by past experiences. Often it takes professional help to overcome them. If you sense you might have a problem, talk to your doctor about it. Overcoming childhood phobias

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr Bill Maier You know what an irrational fear is , don't you? That's a fear that somebody else has. Adults who suffer from phobias usually know that their fears are irrational. But kids don't always understand why things frighten them. Usually, it is caused by a lack of knowledge. We tend to fear what we don't understand. One friend wrote that her daughter was terrified of bees, even though she had never been stung. One idea for this mother is to make a fun project out of helping her daughter overcome this fear. She could read books with her daughter about bees, learning how they live, how they make hives and honey , and how they protect themselves. Her daughter could draw a honeybee and label the different parts of its body. Childhood phobias are best overcome through knowledge and understanding. This might be a good approach if your child has an irrational fear. From TODAY, Voices – Friday, 11-Sep-2009 Related articles by Zemanta Food phobia...

Coping With Anxiety

Image
Image via Wikipedia By Dr James Dobson One of the unfortunate characteristics of life in the modern world is the high level of anxiety so many people experience. Most of us have moments when we feel some kind of emotional discomfort. But for many, gripping fears and uneasiness are everyday companions. This anxiety may manifest itself in the form of dizziness , headaches , nausea , stomach cramps , an inability to concentrate, and persistent conflict with others. For those who find themselves in this situation, let me offer some common-sense suggestions that may help. First, we must take care of our physical being. We need adequate sleep and make the time to exercise and relax because there is a connection between mind and body. Second, we should dig for insight. It is widely believed that anxieties such as agoraphobia are the by-products of repressed feelings. We must learn to deal with them. If we're bitter over a wrong, we must find a way to forgive. If we're afraid of ou...

When stress gets out of hand

Image
By Dr Bill Maier It is the middle of the night and you wake up in a cold sweat . Your heart is racing and your mind frantically works to figure out what is wrong. No, this is not a bad dream ... you are probably having an anxiety attack. Extreme anxiety is more prominent than you might think and people who struggle with it often do not know what to do or where to turn. Some stress is irrational and can become so severe that it leaves a person largely immobilised for weeks at a time. In these cases, it is almost impossible to overcome it without professional help. But other types of stress can actually make us stronger. Everyone goes through times of trial and confusion, and anxiety is a natural response . A healthy dose of concern can often help us work through a problem, or motivate us to change. The key is knowing when anxiety has gotten out of hand. If you go through long periods of depression or laziness on the heels of a stressful situation, you might want to see a doctor. Fro...
