The Lonely Gunman

Image
From TODAY, Voices Wednesday November 26, 2008   By Dr James Dobson   His mother was a dominating woman who gave him no affection, no love, and no discipline during his early years, and other children had very little to do with him.   A school psychologist commented that he probably didn’t even know the meaning of the word “love”. He later married a Russian girl, but she also held him in contempt. She could outfight him and she learned to bully him. Finally, she forced him to leave.   After days of loneliness, he went home, fell on his knees, and literally begged her to take him back. He wept at her feet, but she laughed at him and made fun of his sexual impotency in front of a friend.   Finally, he pleaded no more. No one wanted him. No one had ever wanted him. The next day, he was a strangely different man. He arose, went to the garage, and took down a rifle that he had hidden there. He carried it with him t...

THE BEST YEARS OF MARRIAGE

Image
From TODAY, Voices Tuesday November 25, 2008   By Dr James Dobson   Did you know that one of the highest rates of divorce occurs among couples between the ages of 45 and 50, after the kids have left home? The dynamics of that breakup can be tragic.   When young couples start out together, they talk endlessly about their goals for a family and for the future. But when babies come along, the emphasis changes. Every resource goes into the parenting responsibility. Mum becomes a full-time chauffeur and a fast food-getter, and Dad’s at his professional peak and he finds it very difficult to squeeze out a spare minute, so the marriage goes into hibernation as their attentions are directed elsewhere.   Then suddenly, and with very little warning, the children leave home. Parenting ends with a bang. The house is quiet, and the phone doesn’t ring. The husband and wife sit looking at one another across the breakfast table and realise ...

Teaching Independence, Slowly But Surely

Image
From TODAY, Voices Monday November 24, 2008   By Dr James Dobson   How does a child learn to handle freedom and independence? It takes a precise, calculated effort by the parents.   Teaching your child to deal responsibly with independence and freedom is like luring him out of a five-storey window with a rope. You do it little by little, slowly, deliberately, hand over hand. If you let the rope out all at once, he may plunge to the ground.   I remember a test of my own independence when I was 17 years old. My parents went on a two-week trip and left me behind with the family car, with permission to have some friends over.   I behaved responsibly, but I always wondered why my mother took that risk. When I asked her about it years later, she just smiled and said: Because I knew you would soon be leaving for university, where you would have complete freedom and no one watching over you. I wanted to expose you to that independence ...

S'porean women's progress hampered by parents who are overprotective

From MY PAPER, My Say  THURSDAY NOVEMBER 20, 2008     THE commentary, “When women can dream big dreams” ( my paper , Nov 18), provides food for thought.   Although Singapore women have made some progress in the corporate world and political arena, they are still unable to keep pace with the changes in society.   While their Western counterparts call for equality and say that women can be better than men in anything they do, local women still find their lives revolving around their family, and do not attach great importance to women’s rights.   Singaporean mothers open their eyes wide in disbelief when their daughters express their wish to embark on careers in the uniformed services, such as the police force or military.   They react vehemently, saying that such jobs are meant for men.   Some girls forgo furthering their careers and studies overseas as they do not want to cause unnecessary an...

When women can dream big dreams

From MY PAPER, Home, My News TUESDAY NOVEMBER 18, 2008   ON LESSON FROM U . S . ELECTIONS LEONA BOEY   O BAMA-MANIA has gripped the world. There’s no gainsaying the significance of President-elect Barack Obama’s win, especially in the light of African-American history.   A barrier has been broken, and it’s clear that for the United States and the world, at least one thing has changed for the better.   Am I the only one, though, to think of the other barrier that has yet to be broken?   The world’s superpower came within a hair’s breadth of being led by a woman president or, at least, a woman vice-president.   Consider this: In the US, the 15th constitutional amendment guaranteeing voting rights to black Americans was passed in 1870, whereas women gained voting rights only in 1920.   Almost a century later, a recent World Economic Forum survey of 130 countries showed that while w...

A CHANGE OF PERSPECTIVE

Image
From TODAY, Voices Friday November 21, 2008   By Dr Bill Maier   I know women whose lives once completely revolved around their daytime jobs.   At work they could get more done by noon than most people did all day— and they were just getting started. They’d move from one task to the next without skipping a beat. Competence was their middle name.   Then they decided to have kids and suddenly all that changed.   Days that were once taken up by high-powered meetings were instead spent feeding and diapering their new baby. Their PDA was replaced by a baby bottle.   And they couldn’t be happier! What started out as a short sabbatical from work became their life’s crowning achievement.   Because the thing that changed most in their life was their list of priorities.   What they’re doing now is more important than a million corporate takeovers — and they know it.
